Diane Picio, PhD
I discovered my enthusiasm for academic editing while completing my doctorate at the University of Chicago Divinity School. While there, I worked as an editorial assistant for The Journal of Religion and pursued extensive training and teaching through the University of Chicago’s Writing Program.
At the Journal of Religion, I gained direct experience with stylistic editing, peer-review practices, and publication procedures. This experience has prepared me to meet your editing needs, whether that is formatting footnotes, reviewing page proofs, or helping you determine how to implement peer review feedback.
I honed my understanding of the organization and presentation of academic and technical writing through the University of Chicago’s Writing Program. Through training and teaching in the Writing Program, I learned skills to help authors identify their readers, present challenging and complex ideas and information, and strengthen their arguments without imposing my own ideas or interfering with their writing style and voice.

Copy Edit: $40.00 per hour
Copy editing services are for manuscripts, papers, and assignments that are fully developed but need line editing for clarity, as well as footnote and basic grammatical proofing.

Basic Developmental Edit: $60.00 per hour
This service is for individuals who are still drafting and revising their manuscripts but may need assistance with organization and argument. Perhaps you are unsure which of your “little darlings” to cut? Or maybe you are not sure whether your argument is accessible to the reader? I will evaluate the strength of the manuscript’s argument, assess its organization, and create a plan to implement the necessary edits.

Advanced Developmental Edit: $90.00 per hour
In advanced developmental editing, you have a complete draft and have received some feedback about your manuscript. However, you are struggling with how to proceed. Sometimes it’s difficult to understand why a reader (whether a professor, advisor, colleague, or student) doesn’t find your argument clear, organized, or persuasive. Alternatively, maybe you have received peer review or advisor feedback, but it seems the reader either didn't read your paper or completely misunderstood your point. I will assist you in interpreting feedback, creating a plan to revise the manuscript as needed, and articulating why particular suggestions were adopted or not. To offer you maximum support, I will prepare editorial comments and be available to meet with you via Zoom session(s) to discuss the relevant material and my editorial suggestions.

Writing Accountability: $75.00 per session
Are you struggling to write? Perhaps you feel as though you cannot begin your thesis? Or maybe you have ideas, but you cannot seem to put them on the page? Let me help you with writing accountability.
Writing is a skill that needs consistency to develop. In this service, you will meet with me via Zoom for up to 90 minutes. In this session, we will first identify small goals for you to achieve. Then, for two 25-minute sessions, with a 5-minute break in between, you will write in a shared Google document. The goal here is not to create a perfect writing sample but to get the words on the page. My job here is not to judge what you write but to ensure that you write!
